Comrade Deng Xiaoping is the chief architect of the socialist reform and opening-up in China, the driving force behind the country's modernization, the pioneer of building socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the principal founder of Deng Xiaoping Theory. As a true Marxist with great vision, he embarked on the historic southern tour in early 1992. In a series of talks that he delivered on the trip, he confirmed China's commitment to reform and opening-up by summarizing the lessons and experience the Communist Party of China (CPC) had gained since the 3rd Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee. The tour and talks provided timely answers to many of the fundamental questions about China's reform and opening-up, while liberating people's minds from old ideas by giving them new confidence.
